Heavy Rains in Mumbai

Heavy rains continued to lash Mumbai for the second day affecting normal life and causing water-logging in many low lying areas.

As per the Indian Metrological Department (IMD) data Colaba recorded 69.3 mm of rainfall and Santacruz received 138.0 mm of rainfall from 8.30 am on Sunday, Aug 29 to 8.30 am on Monday, Aug 30.

India Meteorological Department predicts heavy rain for Today and Tomorrow in Mumbai with a maximum temperature of 27 degrees and minimum of 25 degrees.

Intermittent Rain or Thunder showers would occur in parts of the city and suburbs. Heavy Rainfall accompanied by strong gusty wind would occur in some areas.

ISS astronauts contacted from Machu Picchu in Peru

Machu Picchu, a pre-Columbian Inca site located 2,430 meters (7,970 ft) above sea level in Peru, hosted a radio contact with the crew of the International Space Station on Thursday.

Machu Picchu, commonly referred as ?The Lost City of the Incas? is the most familiar icon of the Inca Empire which was the largest empire in pre-Columbian America.

The official language of the empire was Quechua. Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

Machu Picchu was built around 1450, at the height of the Inca Empire and was abandoned almost over 100 years later, in 1572.

The Russian and Peruvian delegations talked with the ISS crew for 10 minutes Thursday. The conversation was made in three languages — Russian, Spanish and the Peru Indian language of Quechua.

Sri Krishna Janmashtami

Janmashtami or Sri Krishna Jayanthi or Gokulashtami or Ashtami Rohini, what ever name you call this festival, marks the celebration of the birth of Lord Sri Krishna.

Lord Sri Krishna was born on the Ashtami day on Rohini Nakshtram. Fasting, chanting bhajans, pujas and many other rituals mark Janmashtami celebrations in India.

Rangoli’s are made in front of the houses in South India and small foot marks are also made to mark the arrival of Lord Sri Krishna into the house.

Sri Krishna was born as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu to kill his maternal uncle ‘Kamsa’, who was a cruel King. Lord Krishna’s teachings in Bhagavad Gita holds special significance among Hindus.

There are many food items that are integral part of this festival. Cheedai, Murukku, Ladoo, Kheer and many other sweet delicacies are prepared on Krishnashtami.

Devotees visit major Krishna temples to seek Lord Krishna’s blessings on Janmashtami. Some people read out 108 names of lord.

Lord Krishna’s idol with cradle and conch, New clothes, flute and ornaments for Lord Krishna, milk, curd, gangajal, honey and ghee for Panchamrit are essential for the Janmashtami Pooja.

Janmashtami in 2010 : This time there is a slight change in Janmashtami festival in different parts of India. In some part of India Janmashtami is on Sep 1st and other regions it is on Sep 2nd.
